Happy New Year to everyone. Here is an update on activities and upcoming events that have been keeping us busy at Mayan Families Canada.
Humanitarian holiday trip to Guatemala, Summer of 2008
Mayan Families Canada will be taking a 12-member team to Guatemala in July 2008. The purpose of the trip is to install over 60 fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves in the homes of disadvantaged families. Our team is comprised of volunteers from across Canada, with half of them being young adults. This is an exciting opportunity for both Mayan Families and the volunteers! Future trips are being planned to continue with this type of work. Please contact Mayan Families Canada if you are interested in participating in a Humanitarian Holiday.
Warming hearts fundraiser
Saturday February 9th, at Nanoose Place - $15 per person/$25 per couple.
Join us for an evening of wine, desserts and conversation.
Our upcoming annual fundraiser will be a “Warming Hearts Evening” featuring wine, gourmet dessert samplers from a local restaurant, music, an informative slide show presentation, balloon raffle, and fantastic door prizes. We are hoping to raise enough money from this event to finalize the purchase of more than 60 stoves that will be installed in July by our Humanitarian Holiday group of volunteers. Please spread the word about this important fundraiser and plan on attending with your friends. For more information, or if you would like to donate an item to our raffle, call 468-7826/468-2328 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
What we've been doing
Springwood Middle School Fundraiser: During the month of October, students from Springwood Middle School, in Parksville, BC, took on the incredible challenge of helping Mayan Families Canada by raising funds and collecting supplies for disadvantaged families in Guatemala. More than 75% of the student population participated with amazing levels of interest, energy and compassion. This school community has managed to sponsor 11 students’ schooling, purchase 7 stoves, provide 23 bags of ground corn for desperate families, collect 15 suitcases of donated items, provide eyeglasses for a high-school student and much more. In total they raised $5,065. This is truly an inspirational school full of compassionate and caring individuals. Well done, Springwood!
Charitable Tax Status: We expect to have our Charitable Tax Status within the next few months. Please keep this in mind when considering your donation.
New Website: We hope to have our website up and running by the end of January. Check it out! We’ll keep you informed about everything we’re doing and where we’re doing it. It will allow you to access information about Mayan Families Canada and Mayan Families Guatemala. It will also show you how YOU can help. Visit it soon at www.MayanFamiliesCanada.org
Volunteering: As always, we are looking for volunteers. Whether you are located in BC, Alberta, Ontario or the U.S., there are ways for you to help: collecting change at the office, sponsoring a child’s schooling, organizing a bottle drive or a fund-raising dinner. Even a small effort on your part can have a life-changing effect on someone in need. For ideas on how you can become involved or for more information about our Humanitarian Holidays, please contact Mayan Families Canada at email@example.com.
