March 1 st, 2009Hello Everyone! Here’s an update to let you know what’s going on with Mayan Families Canada. CHARITABLE TAX STATUS After several months of paper work and patience, we now have our charitable tax status, effective as of November 7 th, 2008. We can issue official Charitable Tax Receipts retroactive to November 8 th, 2007. Please send us an email, including your address, if you would like to receive an official receipt for a donation you have made to Mayan Families Canada in this time frame. STUDENT SPONSORSHIP As usual, the Nanaimo/Parksville/Qualicum area has generously come forward to sponsor students for school in Guatemala. At this time we have 25 students sponsored and the result of this education will significantly improve the standard of living of their families. However, there are three students who are in danger of losing their sponsorship. Mayan Families Canada will do everything it can to continue their education, but we need help. If you would like to sponsor one of these students, please let us know. The cost is $182 per year. CURRENTLY NEEDING SPONSORSHIP
A HOUSE FOR NATALIA Last year we built a house for Elvis. This boy was living with his ill mother, two brothers and sister in a dilapidated, leaky one-room shack with mud floors. He is now the proud owner of a two-room cement brick house, which keeps the family dry and warm. Because of everyone’s incredible generosity, we were also able to build a house for another one of our students, Limni. Her house was in a shocking state and did not provide even basic shelter for her family. Like Elvis, she is now safe and cozy in a two-room cement block house.
