Volunteer Holidays

The thrill of making a difference in someone's life is magnified a hundred fold when you look into their eyes and see a new light of hope.

Volunteer Holidays with Mayan Families Canada provide an opportunity to experience a very unique and diverse culture while making a truly positive impact upon it.

Where are we going?

Participants will fly into Guatemala City and catch a pre-arranged shuttle to our accommodation in Panajachel, Guatemala. The trip takes approximately 3 hours. Panajachel is located in the highlands of Guatemala and is on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlan. With a population of about 14,000, it is rich in Mayan history and culture. Accomodation is in 6 brand new studio apartments in the heart of the town. Each suite accommodates 2 to 3 people.

When are we going?

Our 2010 summer trip is in the planning stages and will likely take place in August, 2010. Each trip is approximately 10 days in duration. You are free to stay longer and enjoy other aspects of Guatemala.

Who is eligible?

Our trip is open to individuals over the age of 17. Climate and working conditions can be difficult, so applicants should be enthusiastic, in good health, and ready to take on some new challenges. Spanish is an asset, but not required.

How can you apply and how much will it cost?

We require a non-refundable down payment of $360 CDN to secure a place. 100% of this money will be put towards items we need to do the work we are undertaking.

Airfare to and from Guatemala is your responsibility and has averaged approximately $1200 in the past two years. Accommodation is $15 - 20/person/night. Each apartment has its own kitchen, bathroom and living area. Accommodation, food and local travel costs are estimated at $600.

Total cost for the 10-day trip, including down payment, travel, food and accommodation comes to approximately $2100 CDN. Each volunteer must have the appropriate shots before the trip – approx. $300.

*Please note that Mayan Families Canada does not guarantee these prices and that travel costs are the responsibility of the participant.
